Irish Authenticity and Natural Warmth

This Fisherman Out of Ireland cardigan reinterprets traditional Irish knitwear in a modern, easy-to-wear everyday version.
Its raglan cut, subtle cable knit, and Donegal tweed material give it natural texture and timeless style.

A distinctive piece, comfortable without being heavy, ideal for all cool seasons.

Donegal Merino Wool with a Lively Feel

Made from 100% Donegal Fleck merino wool

Donegal is an iconic Irish yarn:
a slightly rustic merino wool, punctuated with small natural colored flecks, which give depth and authenticity to the knit.

Features:

  • breathable and thermoregulating merino wool
  • dry warmth without a suffocating feeling
  • durable textured knit
  • naturally uneven and lively appearance
  • excellent durability over time

Unlike modern uniform knits, Donegal tweed retains a handcrafted look and evolves beautifully with wear.

Comfortable and Easy-to-Wear Fit

  • raglan sleeves for natural ease of movement
  • cable knit details inspired by Aran knit
  • comfortable straight fit
  • practical buttons
  • ideal length with trousers or skirts

A versatile cardigan: for indoors, mid-season, or layering under a coat in winter.

Irish Textile Heritage

Made in County Donegal, this knitwear is directly inspired by traditional seaside garments: protective, durable, and functional, while adopting a contemporary line.

Fisherman out of Ireland knits its pieces in Ireland, in the tradition of Irish knitwear.
The dense and stable construction allows the garment to maintain its shape over time and with use.

Styling and Layering Tips

  • over a shirt for a classic style
  • over a t-shirt for a casual look
  • under a coat for winter
  • perfect for travel thanks to its natural thermal regulation
  • A durable piece designed to be worn for a long time - and often.

Maintenance tips

Pure, untreated wool garments do not need to be washed frequently.
Wool has a natural self-maintenance capacity thanks to its fibrous structure, keratin and lanolin.

• Routine maintenance (recommended)

- Regular ventilation in the open air (ideally outside, or in front of an open window).

- Rest after each use: hang the garment on a hanger or drying rack, do not leave it in a ball in order to preserve the fiber and its shape.

- Local cleaning of stains under water at room temperature with Ulrich ox gall stain-removing soap or genuine Marseille soap.

• Complete wash (very rare)

- A complete wash should remain exceptional.

- Hand wash only!

- Cold water or water at room temperature.

- Ulrich Natürlich special liquid wool laundry detergent, ideally the version already enriched with lanolin in order to limit the contact time with water and avoid having to do a separate Cure bath.

-Wash temperature = rinse temperature (avoid any thermal shock).

- Do not wring, wrap in a towel to absorb.

- Dry flat, away from the sun and any source of heat.

Manufacturing & Ecology

Fisherman Out of Ireland knitwear is made in the brand's workshop in Kilcar, County Donegal (Ireland), a region historically linked to knitting and tweed. Production is carried out locally, from knitting to finishing, allowing for direct quality control and a fully managed manufacturing process.

The brand works exclusively with natural fibers. This model is made from a yarn composed of baby alpaca and virgin Highland wool, spun in Peru, then knitted in Ireland.

The choice of sustainable animal fibers and a knit designed to last is part of a logic of prolonged use: a garment worn for a long time reduces its environmental impact compared to textiles that are quickly renewed.

Small-scale production and local manufacturing aim to preserve traditional textile know-how while limiting unnecessary industrial steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Does Donegal wool make you itch?
Not in normal use. It has a more vibrant feel than very smooth wool or cashmere, but remains comfortable against normal skin. Those with very sensitive skin can wear thin underwear.

• How does it differ from classic merino wool?
Donegal is a merino wool spun in a more traditional way:
It contains small colored fibers (“flecks”) and a more textured structure.
Result: more breathable, more durable and less fragile than a very fine mesh.

• Is it a warm cardigan?
Yes,
but breathable warmth.
It keeps you warm without overheating: suitable for indoor use, mid-season and winter under a coat.

• How long can it be worn without washing?
This garment can be worn for one or more years without washing, with simple airing.

Yuliya's Tips

• Avoid using deodorants containing oils (organic or homemade): they can clog the fibers and reduce their ability to breathe, just as some diaper rash creams for babies can clog washable diapers.
If an odor persists despite 1 to 2 days of airing in fresh air, the wool may need to be cleaned.

• This garment should not be machine washed on any cycle. Hand washing is recommended to preserve the garment's size and structure.
Ulrich Natürlich laundry detergent enriched with lanolin is highly recommended.

Ficherman Out of Ireland

Before Fisherman Out of Ireland, there is a much older Irish textile history.

It all began in the 18th century with the wool mills surrounding Blarney Castle. These workshops produced tweeds and sturdy fabrics designed to withstand the harsh Atlantic climate. Wool wasn't a fashion item—it was a daily necessity, a means of protection against wind, damp, and cold.

When the global textile industry became industrialized and standardized, much of this know-how disappeared. But part of this tradition survived: the understanding that a garment must first function before it is decorative.

It was in this context that Fisherman Out of Ireland was born in 1991.
founded by the Blarney Woollen Mills family.

Based in Kilcar, Donegal - a region of fishermen, cliffs and storms - the brand does not seek to reproduce the traditional sweater, but to preserve its logic:

A knit made to live outdoors, last a long time and remain comfortable.

The volumes are lighter, the threads softened, the cuts modernized.

But the original idea remains intact: to create a garment that accompanies real life rather than a trend.

This is not a folk costume.

This is the contemporary evolution of a garment born to survive the climate.
