Ah… pure merino wool tights.

Many of us look for them, and often… in vain.
In this world, synthetics have become the norm: for durability, for machine washing, to avoid returns from unhappy customers.

Finding untreated wool is already difficult.
Finding 100% untreated wool is even more so.

I know this well: I used to offer them at Hirsch Natur.
I bought the last available stock from the brand.
Production stopped.
Why?
Because the foot is the most stressed area of the bodycovered by the most fragile fiber: wool.
To avoid wear and tear and complaints, almost all manufacturers ended up adding plastic. Or stopped manufacturing pure natural products - because demand was completely different.

So when I discovered these Grödo tights - even with 18% organic cotton and 2% elastane - I couldn't pass them up.
They are even the first ones I've found since the Hirsch tights stopped being made.

And yet I accept them under my "Living Wool" label.

Why?

Because here, the synthetic elastane is not used to transform the wool.

It is used to hold it.

Wool remains the active material: it regulates temperature, absorbs moisture, breathes, and adapts.
But alone, in a fine tight knit, it would sag, twist, deform, and wear out faster.

Organic cotton acts as a textile skeleton.
It stabilizes the knit, limits abrasion, and distributes tension.

Elastane - it - is the equivalent of the internal spring.
It does not touch the skin: it is enclosed in the thread and allows the tights to return to their shape instead of remaining stretched out.

In other words:

  • wool works
  • cotton structures and reinforces
  • elasticity holds.

The fiber is not chemically modified to become resistant - it is the construction of the thread that makes the garment wearable.

This is exactly the difference between adapting the material…
and damaging it to adapt it to the machine.

That's why these tights are included in my selection.

The GOTS standard not only certifies organic origin.
It controls the entire textile transformation.

Technical characteristics

  • Knit: fine stretchy knit
  • Season: autumn / winter / cold mid-season
  • Natural thermoregulation
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking
  • No anti-felting treatment (GOTS certification)

Colors:

(in order as in the photo): black, off-white, yellow, heather off-white, brown

Available sizes:

36-38, 38-40, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50

Sizes are expressed in German sizes, but the double size and elasticity facilitate adjustment, and the main difference between two sizes is mainly in length.

Size advice

Untreated wool remains a living fiber: it adapts to the body rather than remaining rigid like a synthetic textile.

  • the width naturally adjusts to the body shape
  • the main difference between two sizes is the length (legs and pelvis)
  • if you are between two sizes: choose the larger size for more comfort
  • the tights relax slightly when worn and then return to their shape when at rest

Example: I am 177cm tall and wear a M-38 FR, I can therefore wear sizes 36-38 AND 38-40, but for my tall size I opt for the longer tights in 38-40.

Composition

• 80% organic Merino wool (GOTS)
• 18% organic cotton (GOTS)
• 2% elastane (inner core)

Maintenance tips

Hand wash at room temperature, using the same water temperature for washing and rinsing, with a special wool detergent. Do not rub or wring. Press in a towel to remove excess water, then dry flat, away from any heat source.

Manufacturing & Ecology

Grödo production is based on a textile approach fully focused on natural fibers.

The materials used are:

• cotton from controlled organic farming
• wool mainly from organic farms
• yarns dyed in Germany
• European manufacturing

GOTS certification requires control of the entire textile chain: processing, dyeing, and finishing.
The brand applies its manufacturing philosophy: simultaneous respect for the wearer, the environment, and comfort of use.

The objective is not only ecological but also functional: to preserve the natural physical properties of the fibers (breathability, thermoregulation, and skin tolerance).

Frequently Asked Questions

• Is this a 100% natural tight?
It contains 2% internal elastane for support. The skin is only in contact with wool and cotton.

• Is it warm?
Yes, but above all thermoregulating: the wool insulates from the cold while wicking away moisture.

• Can it felt?
Like any untreated wool, hot washing or excessive agitation can cause felting. With proper and hand care, it lasts for many seasons.

• Does it itch?
The fine merino knit is designed to be worn directly on the skin. Perception remains individual depending on skin sensitivity, but these tights are very soft.

• Should it be washed after each use?
These tights can be worn many times without washing; airing them out will suffice.

Yuliya's Tips

• Don't miss out on this product, it is truly a great rarity in this quality, with a choice of colors (especially in white!) and with this certification

• These tights should not be machine washed

Grodo

The story of Grödo began in 1924 in the Black Forest, Germany's historic textile region.

For decades, the company manufactured classic hosiery, before making a turning point in 1982: the gradual abandonment of majority synthetic fibers in favor of natural materials.

At a time when industrial practicality was becoming the norm, the brand chose the opposite: to work with wool and cotton for their intrinsic qualities rather than chemically modifying them to adapt them to machines.

Over the years, a small natural collection became a complete range covering all ages.

Grödo thus fits into the German tradition of specialized textile manufacturers: little marketing, but continuity of manufacturing and slow evolution based on the material itself.
