Natural protection, timeless elegance, and absolute comfort

This long Paola coat by Reiff is a key piece for a natural wardrobe: elegant, functional, and incredibly versatile, designed to accompany daily life as well as more formal occasions.
Its long, structured cut, combined with a high collar, offers a modern silhouette while effectively protecting against the cold.

Made from thick organic merino fleece wool, a dense, warm, and protective wool, more supple than classic boiled wool.

A coat designed to last, through seasons and years without going out of style.

Organic merino wool: natural warmth and protection

  • Made from pure organic virgin merino wool (kbT)
  • Thick fleece-type wool, a dense and resistant wool
  • Naturally insulating, breathable, and windproof
  • Excellent protection against the cold without stiffness

How this thick merino wool is obtained

This thick merino wool comes from a controlled mechanical transformation process, which respects the natural properties of the fiber.

The wool is first spun then knitted or woven. The resulting fabric is then subjected to a light mechanical treatment (brushing) combining moisture, movement, and moderate physical action.
This process allows the fibers to slightly relax and rise to the surface, without causing complete felting.

This results in:

  • a material that is denser and warmer than a classic knit,
  • a soft and slightly fluffy surface,
  • a structure that traps more air, naturally improving thermal insulation.

Unlike boiled wool, this process remains deliberately moderate: the fiber retains its suppleness, breathability, and comfort, while offering increased protection against the cold.

A versatile coat, for all occasions

This coat is designed as a true "all-terrain" coat:

  • suitable for everyday wear as well as more formal occasions
  • easy to combine with a dress, trousers, or a more casual outfit
  • perfect for winter and mid-season
  • can be worn open or closed thanks to its stable structure

Its extra-large front pockets are both practical and aesthetic, ideal for keeping hands warm or carrying essentials.

Maintenance tips

Pure, untreated wool garments do not need to be washed frequently.
Wool has a natural self-maintenance capacity thanks to its fibrous structure, keratin and lanolin.

• Routine maintenance (recommended)

- Regular ventilation in the open air (ideally outside, or in front of an open window).

- Rest after each use: hang the garment on a hanger or drying rack, do not leave it in a ball in order to preserve the fiber and its shape.

- Local cleaning of stains under water at room temperature with Ulrich ox gall stain-removing soap or genuine Marseille soap.

• Complete wash (rare). This coat can go years without washing!

- A complete wash should remain exceptional.

- Hand washing is highly recommended.

- Cold water or water at room temperature.

- Ulrich Natürlich special liquid wool laundry detergent, ideally the version already enriched with lanolin in order to limit the contact time with water and avoid having to do a separate Cure bath.

-Wash temperature = rinse temperature (avoid any thermal shock).

- Do not wring, wrap in a towel to absorb.

- Dry flat, away from the sun and any source of heat.

Untreated wool naturally felts under the combined effect of heat, water, and friction. These precautions aim to preserve the fiber's intact structure and natural properties.

Manufacturing & Ecology

The merino wool comes from certified organic farms in Patagonia, guaranteed mulesing-free. After washing, spinning, dyeing, and yarn preparation are carried out in Europe according to GOTS and largely IVN standards. The dyes used are synthetic but selected for their compatibility with ecological standards and are controlled within the framework of textile certifications.

The knitting is done in-house on Stoll machines, then the garment making and finishing are carried out within a radius of about 50 km, ensuring traceability and limiting transport.

Accessories are selected according to ecological criteria: natural buttons (mother-of-pearl, corozo, metal), closures made mostly of recycled plastic and components certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This organization allows for precise quality control and low-impact production.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Is this coat made of boiled wool?
No,
This is not boiled wool in the strict sense.
The fabric is a thick merino wool fleece, obtained through a light mechanical process that densifies the material without complete felting. The result is a warm and protective wool, but softer than traditional boiled wool.

• What is the difference between this and a boiled wool coat?
Boiled wool is heavily felted (hot water), very compact and not very stretchy.
The type of fleece used here is:
- more flexible
- softer
- more comfortable to wear
- while remaining well insulated

It offers an excellent compromise between warmth, comfort and freedom of movement.

• Is it a warm coat?
Yes.
The dense structure of the fabric traps air, which improves thermal insulation.
It is perfectly suited to winter and mid-season, especially for everyday use.

• Does it protect against wind and moisture?
Dense merino wool offers natural protection against the wind.
It is not waterproof, but it tolerates light moisture (drizzle, dry snow) well thanks to the natural properties of wool.

• Does this coat itch?
No.
Merino wool is selected for its fineness and comfort.
The coat is usually worn over other layers, but the material remains pleasant to the touch.

• Why is this coat so warm without a synthetic membrane?
Because wool naturally traps air. These micro-layers of air provide thermal insulation without blocking breathability.

Yuliya's Tips

• I highly recommend hand washing to preserve the size and structure of the garment.
Ulrich Natürlich laundry detergent enriched with lanolin is highly recommended.

This coat can last for years without washing.

Reiff

At Reiff, the story began in 1939 in a small knitting workshop in Gönningen, at the foot of the Swabian Jura. Since then, the company has remained family-owned and has never strayed from its original craft: working with knitwear. Over the generations, the machines have evolved, but the core idea has remained the same – understanding the material before trying to transform it.

The brand initially focused on baby and children's clothing, where skin sensitivity demands real attention. This experience shaped their approach: prioritizing natural fibers, durable construction, and pieces designed for long-lasting wear. Over time, the collections expanded to include adults without altering this initial philosophy.

The organic merino wool comes from certified farms, then continues its journey through Europe before being knitted in their own workshops. The garment making and finishing are done locally, with partners located near the company. This proximity isn't just geographical: it allows them to track each garment from the yarn to the finished product.

At Reiff, sustainability isn't based on an abstract promise but on continuity: the same materials, the same partners, the same time-honored craftsmanship. The garments are designed to withstand everyday wear, endure over time, and often be passed down from one person to another – because a well-made textile doesn't need to be replaced quickly.
