Alpacas live in the Andean highlands, where temperatures can range from -25°C at night to +18°C during the day!
Their fiber has naturally adapted to these extreme variations: it insulates from the cold while wicking away excessive heat.

This product is one of my favorites discovered in Germany during my meeting with the Esencia brand.

It was carefully selected not only for the quality of its natural wool, but also to meet essential expectations:

Size Guide:

Esencia sizes are expressed in international sizes, they size like French sizes. Choose your usual size.
Example: I am 177cm tall and wear an M-38 FR, my size at Esencia is an M.
Thanks to its naturally stretchy ribbed knit, this model conforms to the body with flexibility: size S can also suit a 34, and size XL a 44.

About wool garment sizing

Untreated natural wool retains its natural structure.
Unlike fibers stabilized by polymers, it remains flexible and alive: the fiber can stretch naturally (up to about +30%) then return to its shape, without permanent deformation.

Therefore, an untreated wool garment never remains completely fixed on a strict textile pattern.
It adapts to the body, movements, and ambient humidity: the material works, breathes, and accompanies the morphology.

Consequently, the size does not correspond to a fixed category.
The main difference between two sizes lies primarily in length (sleeves, total height), while the ease in width remains adaptable.

Pure, untreated wool garments do not need to be washed frequently.
Wool has a natural self-care ability.

• Routine maintenance (recommended)

- Regular ventilation in the open air (ideally outside, or in front of an open window).

- Rest after each use: hang the garment on a hanger or drying rack, do not leave it in a ball in order to preserve the fiber and its shape.

- Local cleaning of stains under water at room temperature with Ulrich ox gall stain-removing soap or genuine Marseille soap.

• Complete wash (very rare)

- A complete wash should remain exceptional.

- Hand wash only!

- Cold water or water at room temperature.

- Ulrich Natürlich special wool liquid detergent.

- No lanolin treatment for alpacas

-Wash temperature = rinse temperature (avoid any thermal shock).

- Do not wring, wrap in a towel to absorb.

- Dry flat, away from the sun and any source of heat.

At Esencia, production is not industrial but artisanal.
The garments are made in Bolivia by families working on small-scale knitting machines in local workshops or at home. This method of production allows for a steady, humane pace of work, far removed from mass production lines.

The brand maintains a direct collaboration with its knitters: stable pay, continuous orders, and attention to working conditions. The objective is as much social as it is textile-related – to preserve a thriving craft and local autonomy.

The fibers used – alpaca and baby llama – come from the Andean regions where these animals naturally live. They are known for their excellent thermal insulation, lightness and durability, while requiring few resources to produce.

• Is it warmer than merino wool?
Yes, at the same weight, but above all, the heat is drier and more stable. The ribbed knit adds extra thickness and warmth, trapping hot air.

• Is he scratching?
Most people tolerate it directly on the skin; it's a really soft and pleasant garment.

• Is he relaxing?
The knit adapts to the body and then returns to its original shape at rest.

• How long can it be worn without washing?
This garment can be worn for one or more years without washing, with simple airing.

• This one is incredibly soft and a very beautiful garment!

• Thanks to its thickness, it can be worn alone even in very cold weather. For added insulation, you can also add Cosilana wool-silk leggings as a base layer.

• This garment should not be machine washed on any cycle. Hand washing is recommended to preserve the garment's size and structure.
Ulrich Natürlich laundry detergent is highly recommended.

Before being a winter accessory, an Esencia piece begins far from shop windows and seasons.

In Denmark, since 2004 the brand has been designing simple clothes, made to be worn for a long time - understated shapes, without fashion trends, designed to accompany everyday life rather than follow it.

Then the project travels to La Paz, Bolivia. There, knitting isn't a rediscovered technique; it's a skill passed down through generations. The pieces are made in small family workshops, on human-scale machines, far removed from continuous industrial production lines. The rhythm remains that of the hand and the eye: checking the stitch, adjusting the tension, starting again if necessary. Nothing is automated to the point of becoming impersonal.

Each garment is born from a subtle dialogue: clean Scandinavian design on one side, Andean textile tradition on the other. Not an anonymous production, but a meticulous manufacturing process, where we still know who knits and how.

The material itself tells the story of this connection. Alpaca comes from high plateaus where temperature variations are extreme: dry cold in the morning, intense sun during the day, and frost at night. Its fiber has developed to manage these variations—retaining heat without trapping moisture, protecting without suffocating.

Wearing Esencia is therefore not just about wearing a warm and breathable knit.

It's about wearing an object that took time: time to design, time to knit, time to do it right rather than quickly.
